Another Dog Died This Day

Another Dog Died This Day
(in memoriam)
by Phillip Kimpo Jr.

all this I saw
as the jeepney passed him by:

the blood wasn’t as crimson as I thought it would be
it had a purplish tinge, but
blood nonetheless.
the dog wasn’t as dead as I thought it would be
he was twitching spasmodically, legs sticking out into the air,
broken, twisted in a macabre moment, but
dead nonetheless.

carefree and carefree he must’ve been, running through the street
careless and careless was the man behind the wheels, who
slammed his car into carefree dog.

even as the dog’s life twitched away
his red snout pointed upwards, his eyes pierced the skies
his head shook convulsively, as if
laughing.

this pleasant, sunny day
another dog went to heaven
laughing at men’s
frailties.

are you talking about roadkill? because i hate roadkill.

this is a very compelling poem. it juxtaposed macabre humor with sadness, quite hard to pull off if a writer lacks temerity or plain panache.

i'm glad you tried your hand at this, corsarius. makes me believe in pushing the envelope a little more.

roadkill, indeed. and yes, i share your hate. it's just that...i felt i had to express it in a poem, otherwise, no person would do that poor dog's excruciating death just a little bit of honor. i didn't want it to be forgotten. for good or for bad.

curse be the stupid driver who killed, yes, KILLED that harmless dog. and of all places, in UP, where speed limits are unspoken but taken to heart.

mabuhay ka, askal! binigyang kulay mo ang isang araw sa buhay naming lahat. [argh. i wish my heart didn't swiftly turn soft regarding animals and their welfare.]

yes another dog went to heaven
laughing with pain
i'm glad at least i'm not a human
if that is how a man treat his own
best friend

to jonas: yes, i hear you bro..if that't how we treat our 'best friends' -- and basically every other living thing on this world -- then i don't know how the word 'humane' got its benign connotation.

to DotBar: unfortunately, many things in life are as gross, and even more gross, than this. :(

Krissy said (on the cbox): Ah damn. That was a sad sight. T_T I hate seeing dogs and cats become roadkill. Reminds me of my beloved pet. Lovely poem, btw.
