Deviations II: Touch the Sky

[Remember the first Deviations? Again, not for kids. This piece is best read with Kanye West's Touch the Sky playing in the background. ]

Touch the Sky

"For the day you die, you gonna touch the sky"

Johnny Martires was a good guy -- all Johnnies are, of course. He was generous in patience, love, and other goofy-good what-not. But others weren't as generous to him; for example, his girl. But he wasn't crying, no, not all Johnnies cry. He was smiling from ear to ear, epilepsisyzing himself to Kanye West's tune loudly playing in his room, conquering every sound wave from there out to a one mile radius.

Johnny's girl had just torn him to tatters. She shattered him as brutally as gravity destroys a Superman toy dropped from a hundred stories high. But the song slapped his pieces back into place with P. Diddy's Mighty Bond. The song always put him in ecstasy. No -- the song itself was ecstasy. Kanye West was his prophet of salvation; Lupe Fiasco was the holy sidekick. Touch the sky, baby, touch the sky, yeah, sky high.

"Baby, I'm going on an airplane, and I don't know if I'll be back again"

Kanye West's groovy gospel was truly heaven-sent. Johnny was flying to the province in a week's time. He was leaving his girl behind, and he hoped, everything else. The song was his covenant with the Grim Reaper. Yes, Grim Reaper with the bling-bling hanging from his neck, shining angel wings sprouting from his back, bloody scythe traded in for a gold-plated one.

But Bad Luck was Kanye West's foe, and so a tormentor of his disciples. The plane didn't crash, and the return trip was equally uneventful. Johnny ended up safe and sound at his home, surrounded by Kanye's mesmerizing pontifications. He listened for hours, for days. His head swayed with every beat. Then he realized -- all hope wasn't lost. He can still touch the sky. Yeah, sky high.

"I gotta testify, come up in the spot looking extra fly, for the day I die, I'mma touch the sky"

He went out, took a ride to the University, to the hallowed, towering Hall where he and his girl first met. He showed his old faded ID to a yawning guard. As he went up the stairs, he passed by both young and old students, people still clutching to dreams of touching the sky, to snuggle into cubicle prisons of the skyscrapers of Makati and Ortigas. He sneered -- he'll reach the sky first.

The sun shone brightly on the rooftop. He walked to the edge, eyes fixed on the clouds leisurely sailing above.

"For the day I die, I'mma touch the sky"

He spread his arms, then jumped off the edge.

He flew.

"I'm, I'm sky high. I'm, I'm sky high. I'm, I'm sky high..."

Sorry, no Kanye West on my playlist. All I have are Goo Goo Dolls (I'm an addict), Lifehouse, Maroon 5, Matchbox 20, Rage Against the Machine, Simple Plan and all those stuff my kids would rather not have me playing at full blast in the middle of the night while I'm working away on my trusty ol' ThinkPad.

But I do dig each and every word of your piece, nonetheless.

(I'll probably return later with a snarky comment characteristic of me lately after a few bottles of the good stuff.)

once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned upward, for that is where you have been, and that is where you long to return.

(typed from memory, unsure if correct)

i'm in a flight fix too - with tsubasa and all. ah, no, i've always been into flight.

i think johnny's jump was worth it. anybody who's not into flight is... weird.

('twas nice listening to the story with some eerie vocals in my head. watch tsubasa i tell you, it's got wonderful music at the very least. not to mention a heartbreaking premise.)

j angelo, do your kids have access to your thinkpad? hehe. thanks for the compliment.

btw, you mentioned before that those bottles of the good stuff help you be creative (or juiced up for work). but then, reading your line, i get the impression that the snarkiness is a side effect, too, of the good stuff. so snarkiness = creativity? hehe! just curious.

ia, do you really believe johnny martires jumped so he can fly? maybe he didn't...or maybe he did. hmm, i don't even know. ;)

that's a beautiful line of da vinci's, btw.

Yes, probably a side effect. Or maybe I've just been snarky lately in the first place.

As for snarkiness = creativity, maybe it is so. I know some really snarky people who are quite the creative people (or at least they have a snarky side that they show sometimes).

i've always loved to fly... whether it be with superpowers or a jet plane. i loved that one. it made me feel quite sad but happy and free in the end. i don't really know. but i love how you write. i really really love how you write. that was awesome. ;)

Sometimes, the only way to know how high you could really become is to fly. Let go of inhibitions and let gravity support or pull you.

I'm digging the way you write ;)

the ending gave me goosebumps, corsair. i love such tragic endings becoming our salvation. geez, where'd you get these ideas, huh? you kiddo. :D you scare and amaze me at the same time.

and the grimm reaper with the bling bling and golden scythe. made my lips curl. very kanye west. hehe.

j angelo, i will take note of that. when i've stalled down the creativity highway, maybe i can turn to being snarky. hm..

olrayt, thanks man. book? i think it's about three years away ;) just kiddin. plans have been stalled as of late.

right on, yayam. the music vid was spectacular, methinks -- fits the song nice and blingy. thank you so much for the kindest words. will keep them close to heart for my inspiration.

thanks a lot, nina. i never imagined someone would think so swell of this piece -- i actually thought it would turn out to be a chaotic mash-up of words, as this is the first piece i wrote with frenzied music playing in background (yep, believe it or not).

teri, that's true. to put it in cheesy words, spread your wings and reach for the sky. thanks for the vote of confidence ;)

claudzki, "touch the sky" was my first brush with kanye. the video enthralled me, the song entranced me.

ah, goosebumps. hera, a year ago (i think), i wrote a short piece with a similar tragic ending. that gave me goosebumps, writing the last lines. "touch the sky" didn't. maybe i got desensitized to my own pen-work? nah. i think i was just happy for johnny martires.

btw, i do hope i amaze you more than i scare you! :P
